True Faith Asks For Wisdom James 1:5-8
Last WEEK, our focus was on James 1:2-4.
Do you remember what is necessary to persevere through trials?
Check out your notes if you can’t remember!
Reviewing is a wonderful tool to help us remember.
This WEEK, we’re going to take a bigger bite of God’s Word, focusing on 8 verses, James 1:5-12.
Today, we will focus specifically on v5-8, by reading these verses with a questioning mindset.
Open GODcha to the Book of James.

Why Did James Write to His Brethren?
As we go into the 8th week of our discovery, you should be able to answer this.
If you can’t remember, it is just a touch away in the OVERVIEW.
It’s very important to keep James’ purpose in the back of your mind as you work through your discovery this week.
Remember To Pray
O LORD, we come to You, asking that You teach us your ways so we will walk in Your truth, (Psa 86:11). Thank you so much!
Before We Begin
Did You Consider CONTEXT?
CONTEXT is the setting that Rules Interpretation.
We need to keep in mind what Jam 1:2-4 was about in order to help us determine the meaning of the next few verses.
What is the context?
The context for these verses is trials.
Thus, we are LOOKING at ‘what we need’ and ‘do‘ in the midst of our trials.

#5. Do you understand trials can become temptations.
What do you learn and understand about temptations, and God the Father, CR? (v13-18)
Now, Let’s LOOK at What God Says.
Let GODcha guide you in your discovery.
What does it suggest?
Where shall we begin?
READ God’s Word
Let’s read the next paragraph, James 1:5-8, asking the 5W’s and H.
Why don’t you try it on your own first?
And then if you get stuck, I’ll help you out.
How Did You Do?
Let’s give it a try together.
if WHO? if any of you
WHO is the ‘you’? (the brethren)
If any of you (brethren) WHAT? lacks wisdom,
(Think: lacks wisdom WHEN?)
(The context is in the midst of any trial)
WHAT is he (the brethren) to do?
let him ask
ask of WHO? of God,
ask of God for WHAT? wisdom
(Do you see what we need?)
WHAT does God do?
gives WHAT? (wisdom)
gives wisdom to WHO? to all (WHO are the all?)
gives wisdom HOW? generously
HOW else does God give wisdom? without reproach
WHAT happens WHEN one asks?
(‘it’ is referring to WHAT? (wisdom))
it (wisdom) will be WHAT? given to him
‘him’ WHO? (the one who asks)
let him ask God HOW?
let him ask in faith
ask in faith without WHAT? without any doubting,
WHY must he ask without doubting?
for the one who doubts is like WHAT?
is like the surf of the sea driven
is WHAT else?
tossed by the wind.
(Do you see what is contrasted with faith?)
(Do you see what a doubter is compared to?)
v7 WHAT is the result for a doubter?
WHAT can the doubter not expect?
Let not the doubter expect that he will receive
receive WHAT? anything
receive anything from WHO? the Lord.
v8 WHY can he not expect to receive anything from the Lord?
HOW is the doubting man described?
Being a double-minded man,
WHAT is the result of being double-minded?
unstable in all his ways.

What else does GODcha lead and guide us to do?
Meditate on God who is Key.
Our goal is to come to KNOW our God…
What do you LEARN about ‘God’ who is always Key?
Remember we began making a List on God in our Notes.
As you continue to get to know God and His ways, you want to keep adding all you are learning to your List.
Reflect on trials, wisdom, faith, doubt.
What do we ‘need’ in trials?
What are we to ‘do’?
Consider Contrasts and Comparisons.
The author will point out ‘differences’ and ‘similarities‘ to help shed more light and understanding on the idea he is trying to get across.
TIP: Remember tap anything in COLOR to get directions or more information.
Contrasts are of things that are opposite/different, indicated by the words: but, however, never-the-less.
Comparisons are of things that are alike or similar, indicated by the words: like and as.
What is being contrasted?
What is being compared?
This will help you understand the point James is making.
Oh, you are hearing from God! And discovering Truth for yourself!
“Do you see that your education or lack thereof (that’s me no degrees!) isn’t the issue! It is a matter of setting your heart on knowing God and discipling yourself to achieve that goal.” Kay Arthur
Take a Breath!
Meditate all day on needing wisdom in your trials.
Ponder that God gives wisdom generously and without reproach to those who ask.
What a marvelous, wonderful promise!
Let this soak in.
Soak in down deep!
“I will meditate on Your precepts And regard Your ways. I shall delight in Your statutes; I shall not forget Your word,” (Psalm 119:15-16).
Don’t Forget to Journal Your Discovery in Your Notes
Did you have any questions?
Put them in your Notes.
Ask God to answer them.
As we continue digging, He will answer every single one of them!
I cannot stress enough to make a List on God.
We want to come to KNOW our God.
This will be a tremendous resource for you to go back to, and aid you in praising God and praying according to Truth.
You will be so glad you did!
Let’s Close in Prayer
Perhaps. . .
OUR GRACIOUS HEAVENLY FATHER, we praise You! We come to You today and thank you for Your Word that is a sure Word of Truth. We are most grateful that You are teaching us how to see what You say, by teaching us how to read Your Word with a purpose. Please let this skill become like second nature to us. Thank you for taking us into a deeper understanding of our trials. Thank you for showing us that we need wisdom when You shake us in our trials. We need Your wisdom to obey You and Your Word, responding as we should! Oh Father, may we grip this simple Truth, that we are to ask You in faith for wisdom. Oh Father, I ask that each of us would get into the habit of running to You, and not man! May we be ever so dependent upon You, asking You at every turn for Your wisdom. May we believe, not doubting, that You can and will help us. Thank you Father God. We ask these things in the precious name of our Lord Jesus. Amen!
Can’t wait to see you next time to see what God teaches us.
Next: we will LOOK @ God’s Wisdom in James 1:5-8.
